It is what it is. Or is it more than it seems? That’s the intriguing paradox in which you become entangled when you look at the work of Abel Minnée. His photographs are clear and simple. They have the technical perfection of advertising photography but demand more of the viewer than a quick glance. The subjects seem chosen at random, but nothing about Minnée’s work is accidental or fleeting . The way  his work has developed recently is fascinating. His photos seems more and more the result of performative acts. He creates a still life from the things used to clean an exhibition space, for example. He makes a photograph of it, which he then presents in that same exhibition space. These acts don’t even necessarily have to lead to a photo. From all the light sources in the studio used by him and his friends, Minnée has made an installation called ‘Privileged instants and any-instant whatevers, an ideal synthesis of Studio Spaan & Co (Bram Spaan, Mounir Raji, Maarten van der Kamp, Abel Minnée), Daniël Goedkoopstraat 8, Amsterdam’. Referring to one of the essential aspects of photography, he’s created a tiny installation from the fridge lamp, the light in the sandwich toaster and the bulb that illuminates the studio. His interest in investigating aspects of photography, the camera, the medium – and not just by making photos – gives depth to Minnée’s artistic practice. It triggers a desire to go on following the development of his still young oeuvre closely.

Het is wat het is. Of: is het meer dan dat het lijkt? Dat is de intrigerende paradox waarin je verstrengelt raakt als je kijkt naar het werk van Abel Minée. Zijn foto’s zijn helder een eenvoudig. Ze hebben de technische perfectie van een reclamefoto maar vragen meer van de kijker dan een snelle blik. De onderwerpen lijken lukraak gekozen maar niets aan het werk van Minée is toevallig en snel. De ontwikkeling die hij de laatste tijd doormaakt is een fascinerende. Steeds meer lijken de foto’s het gevolg van performatieve handelingen. Zo maakte hij een stilleven van de spullen die gebruikt werden om een tentoonstellingsruimte schoon te maken. Hier maakte hij een foto van die hij presenteerde in dezelfde tentoonstellingsruimte. Die handelingen hoeven niet eens meer per sé tot een foto te leiden. Van alle lichtbronnen uit de studio van hem en zijn vrienden maakte Minée de installatie Priviliged instants and any-instant whatevers, an ideal synthesis of Studio Spaan & Co (Bram Spaan, Mounir Raji, Maarten van der Kamp, Abel Minnée), Daniël Goedkoopstraat 8, Amsterdam. Van het koelkastlampje, het lichtje van het tosti-apparaat en het peertje dat de studio verlichtte, maakte hij, verwijzend naar een van de essentiële aspecten van de fotografie, een minutieuze installatie. De interesse om de aspecten van de fotografie; de camera; het medium te onderzoeken maar niet slechts door het maken van foto’s, geeft verdieping aan het kunstenaarschap van Minnée. Het triggert om zijn nog jonge oeuvre aandachtig te blijven volgen.
