Bertien van Manen passed away on 26 May 2024. I was lucky enough to speak with her shortly before, for the book I Am The Only Woman There, a new edition of her series Vrouwen te gast from 1979. I met Berien when we collaborated on the exhibition Let’s Sit Down Before We Go for Foam in 2012. We kept in touch. She was and is an example to me of how to live an independent and unconventional life as a woman; critical but caring, sometimes vulnerable, fearlessly zestful, curious and passionate about the things you do.
